NUS Module Review for AY1718 SEM 1!
Here are the modules I took this semester:
LSM2212 Human Anatomy
LSM2233 Cell Biology
LSM2191 Laboratory Techniques for Life Science
PR2202 Perfumes and Cosmetics
GET1031 Computational Thinking
GER1000 Asking Questions
Yes, I overloaded this semester π
LSM2212 Human Anatomy
One 2-hour lecture weekly
One 2-hour Practical/Museum session weekly
No webcast
40% CA MCQ + Essay
60% Finals MCQ
Best thing about this mod: Really interesting!
Worst thing about this mod: Loads of content to memorize
I enjoy this module although the amount of content to study for is crazy. The Profs took away the webcast which really sucks because the content they are teaching is foreign (esp with some medical/anatomical terms that you probably never heard before) and you can't review it if you missed some part.
Museum/Lab sessions are interesting and fun because you get to see cadavers (actually pretty scary for me), organs, histology slides and stuff. && you get to learn interesting things going on in your body! But to take this mod, prepare to memorize everything.
CA & Finals was manageable. Finals quite tricky though
Grade: A- (Surprisingly)
Recommended!!
LSM2233 Cell Biology
Two 2-hour lecture weekly
Webcasted
64% CAs - 8 IVLE quizzes, Video + Poster Assignment, In-class discussion, CAs
36% Finals SAQ (Open-book)
Best thing about this mod: Useful skills taught, Application-based module = no need memorize anything (THANK GOD)
Worst thing about this mod: ALOT of assignment!!! Very time-consuming module.
This module is quite useful for LS major but there's ALOT of assignment! I am not kidding!! For such module with so many assignments, you would think there will be no finals... The content is taught by two lecturers, Prof Thilo and Prof YFM. (Diff lecturers for sem1/2 i think)
Thilo lectures are interesting but hard to follow because he teach quite fast! Lucky there's webcast. In the beginning I would say it's a bit hard to catch up so you might have to go home and review the webcast to understand what's going on.
The in-class discussion was easier for Thilo part - you just have to form groups of 2/3 and discuss on a given topic in glass via a platform.
For YFM part, her lectures are more well-organized and structured. Thus easier to follow than Thilo's. However, her assignments are content heavy, especially for the in class discussion where we have to read a research paper and make comments (>8 comments i think, cant rmb coz it was so long ago!) via an online platform as well.
Finals was quite manageable. Application questions so yay! no memorization needed.
Grade: A-
Recommend if you want to learn more techniques-related stuff + how to interpret results.

LSM2191 Laboratory Techniques for Life Science
Preallocated
One 2-hour lecture weekly
One 6-hour lab weekly
Webcasted
25% CA MCQ (x2)
25% Lab Report (x2)
Best thing about this mod: Learn lab skills
Worst thing about this mod: The structure of this module.
Okay honestly, it has been so long so I kinda forget what I had gone through for this module.
Lab sessions were okay, quite boring and time consuming. You can form your own groups of 4, make sure you can work with them! Lab report were individual and marked by your TAs. My TA was not very knowledgeable and very blur ):
Grade: B+ (Honestly I think is because of my TA!)

PR2202 Perfumes and Cosmetics
Two 2-hour lecture weekly
Webcasted
40% CAs - Group project, CA1, Assignment
60% Finals MCQ + SAQ
Best thing about this mod: Quite interesting
Worst thing about this mod: Loads of content to memorize + not sure what they are focusing on/gonna test
Interesting module to take as a UE. Can form your own groups for project. I was quite lucky to be in a group where one of the members know how to use photoshop hahaha. The project was to come up with your own shampoo and target consumers as well as the ingredients to be used etc. I love one of the lecturers, she always bring so many perfumes sample to class! It's really a lot! She will display in front of the LT and you can just go down and spray @ yourself/smell it.
Grade: B+

GET1031 Computational Thinking
One 2-hour tutorial bi-weekly
Online Lectures
100% CAs - weekly online quizzes, group project, final reflection paper, individual assignments
Best thing about this mod: Some topic are quite interesting.
Worst thing about this mod: I really really dislike this module.
OK I rmb that I really really hate this module!! I think i just don't have the CS brain/thinking so this mod was quite tough for me. Project groups is random and allocated. My group mates were ... not very cooperative and one of them just didn't do anything for the project at all. There were actually no peer review but i think a lot of students complained that someone in their group never contribute so end up the profs circulate an email with a survey form to ask us to rate our peers hahaha. && I feel quite sad bcos i think someone rate me down ): when actually I contribute fairly also okay! Just that not good at this mod what, what can I do. Zzzzz.
The profs are very very last minute kind too.
Grade: B/B- (SU-ed)

100% CAs - assignments, MCQ, forum post
Best thing about this mod: Get to experience how other major/module are like
Worst thing about this mod: None (quite an okay mod)
This mod lets you experience a pillar of every course (something like that). Like some philosophy stuff, physics, design etc. Quite interesting/light content. My tutor was a korean girl, she's very nice and pretty! Hehe.
Okay that's it, ciao.

Hello, fellow Life Sciences student here! May I know if PR2202 is webcasted? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHello there! For the semester I took this module, it was webcasted. Not sure if they changed it though!
DeleteHi may I know for PR2202, how are the project groups formed?

I’m currently planning on taking this module and would love to have some additional resources (lecture, tutorial notes, past year papers, quizzes and assignments, book).
Could you kindly share your materials (files/folder) with me? I’d really appreciate it, truly.
If there’s anything I can do for you in return, please don’t hesitate to let me know.
